- EMS for Children Innovation and Improvement Center (EIIC) leverages partnerships with national professional organizations to provide EMSC grantees and the emergency care community with training, support and tools to improve pediatric emergency care delivery across diverse emergency care systems across the continuum of care. With a growing body of evidence-based resources, the EIIC uses an enhanced and innovative approach to knowledge dissemination that utilizes novel technologies, subject matter expertise in the development of resources, and quality improvement (QI) methodology to minimize morbidity and mortality due to illness and injury in children. With a heavy emphasis on the prehospital and hospital based community, the EIIC鈥檚 effort will also target the lay public, ESMC stakeholders, advocates and the scientific community. Services: A systems-based approach will be used to align priorities and efforts across organizations and domains of emergency care: trauma, hospital, prehospital, disaster preparedness, research, and state/territory-based EMSC programs. Matrixed with these core domains and a team-of-teams approach are knowledge management, QI collaboratives, advocacy, analytics, and value-based care. The co-principal investigators from Dell Medical School, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, and University Hospitals Rainbow Babies and Children鈥檚 Hospital, Cleveland, OH in conjunction with co-investigators from Yale University School of Medicine, the Lundquist Institute for Biomedical Innovation at Harbor UCLA, and 草榴社区入口/Texas Children鈥檚 Hospital, together will expand the existing EIIC partnerships to include the Emergency Nurses Association, National Association of State EMS Officials, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American College of Emergency Physicians, and the American College of Surgeons. National QI collaboratives, dissemination toolkits, novel educational platforms, and innovative communication techniques will be used to drive expansion and enhancement of the pediatric emergency care workforce, integration of best practices, and ultimately adoption of evidence based strategies to decrease pediatric morbidity and mortality.

- This PECARN study is a prospective, observational cohort study of children ages 4 to 17 years old who have sufficiently high probability of pulmonary embolism (PE) to warrant objective diagnostic testing with a D-dimer or pulmonary vascular imaging. The goal is to measure the diagnostic accuracy of a prediction rule for exclusion of PE and the D-dimer.

- Sickle Cell Disease is an "arginine deficiency syndrome" associated with early mortality & Vaso-occlusive Episodes . Increased arginase activity from both inflammatory triggers & more significantly from erythrocyte-arginase release during hemolysis, leads to low arginine bioavailability. Although mechanisms of arginine dysregulation are complex & multifactorial, they can be overcome through arginine supplementation, a phenomenon known as the 'arginine paradox'. In transgenic mouse models of SCD, arginine supplementation inhibits the red cell Gardos channels, reduces red cell density, improves perfusion and reduces lung injury, microvascular vaso-occlusion and mortality. We therefore hypothesize that L-arginine is a safe and efficacious intervention to alter the vaso-occlusive physiology and improve care for children with VOEs.
